5G Course
The 5G Networks graduate course is offered to both Carleton University and University of Ottawa master’s and Ph.D. students. Now in its fourth year, 89 students have completed the course, some of whom have achieved full-time roles at Ericsson.
The course introduces students to 5G wireless communications, with learning outcomes consisting of the planning, designing, developing and managing of 5G networks using best practices, standards and tools.
The course integrates both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, featuring occasional guest lectures by Ericsson researchers and lab tours of the 5G Lab in the ARISE building. This year, students had the opportunity to tour the Ericsson Ottawa site.

5G Course Publication Receives Award
This year, a new paper that resulted from the 5G course was submitted and published, titled "Multivariate Polynomial Public Key Digital Signature Trefoil Knot Algorithm."
It appeared in the proceedings of the 2024 IEEE 13th International Conference on Communications, Circuits and Systems.
The authors of this paper were Tommy Zhou, Zhehan Wang, Atinderpal Singh Lakhan, Iyad Isleem, Mohammed Abuibaid and Jun Steed Huang.
The paper was presented at the conference held in Xiamen, China, and won the "Best Presentation Award".

5G Course Survey
A survey was distributed to all 22 students who completed the 5G course in the 2023-2024 academic year. The survey was aimed at gathering insights into student motivations for enrolling in the course. 17 students (4 Ph.D., 12 master’s, 1 undergrad) completed the survey. Highlights include:
- Only 5 students had prior experience in 5G or telecommunications before taking the course.
- All students cited one of the following reasons for taking the 5G course:
- The course was recommended to them by friends/peers/advisors/professors.
- They had an interest in 5G technology and wanted to gain more knowledge.
- Were aware of and wanted to pursue career prospects relating to 5G technology.
Ericsson Ottawa Site Tour Feedback
Students who attended the very first Ericsson Ottawa site tour in 2024 were surveyed to gather feedback on their experience. A total of 11 students completed the survey.
- All students rated their tour experience a 5/5.
- When asked for suggestions for next year’s tour, most students preferred to have a longer visit, with more time to spend in the labs and interacting with staff.
- When asked to identify the top three highlights of the tour:
- Knowledge and Learning: Several students mentioned that they gained new knowledge, learned about 5G technology and had a positive educational experience.
- Interactions with Staff: Many students emphasized the positive interactions with employees and staff, including their friendliness and helpfulness when answering questions.
- Lab and Testing Facility Visits: Multiple students enjoyed visiting the labs and seeing first-hand the various aspects of the testing and design process.
