Message from the Ericsson 5G Chair, Dr. Ioannis Lambadaris

"The progress we’ve made over the past year has been incredibly rewarding. The successful installation of Carleton’s private standalone 5G network and the completion of our Drone Lab represent major steps forward—not just for our university, but for Canada’s research landscape. Being able to demonstrate real-time drone control and localization over our 5G infrastructure is a clear indicator of the transformative potential of this technology.

One of the highlights was our recent demonstration at the joint Ericsson/Carleton 5G Lab, where we showcased seamless integration between our 5G network and autonomous drone systems. These kinds of real-world applications are exactly what we envisioned when we began this journey.

This success underscores the value of strong industry-academic partnerships. Collaborating with Ericsson has allowed us to align cutting-edge research with practical innovation, accelerating the development of technologies that will shape the future of connectivity, automation, and smart infrastructure. When academia and industry work together, we create environments where ideas can move quickly from concept to impact—and that’s where real innovation happens."

What’s next for the Ericsson Chair in 5G Wireless Research

I’m excited to see our partnership continue to grow, particularly through new collaborations that leverage Carleton’s expertise in the Departments of Electronics and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. In addition to the ongoing projects under the supervision of the Chair, I look forward to advancing research in key areas such as antenna beamforming, fault detection in wireless components (including RF amplifiers), and electronic design for RF over fiber systems.

Looking ahead, my research interests will expand to include the design and evaluation of wireless network components using innovative optimization techniques, including machine learning and artificial intelligence. These efforts will complement and build upon our current initiatives, driving forward impactful advancements in wireless technologies.
