ERICSSON-CARLETON MOBILE WIRELESS LAB & DRONE LAB
In June 2025, Ericsson and Carleton hosted a booth at the IEEE International Conference on Communications in Montreal.

There were several people there representing Carleton, including Prof. John Lambadaris, Ericsson Chair in 5G Wireless Research. Here, researchers from the Ericsson-Carleton Mobile Wireless Lab showcased two demonstrations and a slideshow outlining the lab’s research activities. The demos were entitled:
- 5G-TSN/DetNet Integrated Networks for Industrial Automation
- Bluetooth Coexistence with Wi-Fi 6E: Emulation, RF measurements, LBT, Frequency Hopping, and Hybrid Approaches
Notably, the publication related to the first demo was presented with the Best Industry Paper Award at the IEEE World Forum on Internet of Things. This project highlighted the machine learning-based dynamic activation of TSN/DetNet replication functions for dual-UE robot-to-cloud communication — balancing bandwidth use and reliability.
Additionally, at the Montreal conference, the Ericsson booth saw huge interest in the 5G-based drone and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) research. The Carleton Ericsson booth was also specifically selected to attend the ATG Forum presentation.
Spotlight on Innovation: Ericsson–Carleton Lab Showcases Ottawa’s Research Leadership

In July 2025, the Ericsson–Carleton Mobile Wireless Lab and Drone Lab had the honour of welcoming Ontario Minister Nolan Quinn to our shared innovation space. His visit offered an opportunity to highlight how our work is connected to real-world needs and challenges faced by governments, industries, and communities.
Our labs bring together students, researchers, and engineers to explore the future of wireless technology. From advancing 5G networks to testing autonomous systems, our projects combine technical innovation with hands-on training, helping to develop Canada’s next generation of tech talent.
By engaging directly with our teams and seeing projects in action, Minister Quinn’s visit reinforced the importance of bridging academic research with public leadership. These moments help extend the reach of our work and ensure it has a meaningful impact beyond the lab.

The Ericsson-Carleton Drone Lab is a platform for innovation – the first university lab in Canada with an Ericsson Indoor 5G RDS network, and the only place in Canada where graduate students and researchers have access to a private standalone 5G network. This lab will enable world-class aero mobility research, innovation and next-generation talent in our region, and is a special part of the Ericsson-Carleton Mobile Wireless Lab.

5G Lab Outcomes
Earlier in the spring, the installation of the 5G Core in the ARISE building was finalized. This represents a major event that enables Carleton to have a completely in-house private standalone 5G network, which is accessible by faculty and student researchers. Carleton is the only university in Canada with such an advanced networking facility.
Furthermore, the Drone Lab is set up and fully functional. Safety netting was installed along with a state-of-the-art optical localization system, which can provide accuracy to the millimetre. Drone interfacing and control over the 5G standalone network has been completed and a preliminary demonstration was showcased during the Ericsson-Carleton Drone Lab inauguration on June 24.
